The 2–Loop Effective Potential of the 3d SU(2)–Higgs Model in a General Covariant Gauge

چکیده
To study the convergence of the loop expansion at the high–temperature electroweak phase transition, we calculate the 2–loop effective potential of the 3d SU(2)–Higgs model in a general covariant gauge. We find that the loop expansion definitely breaks down for large ξ, but converges rather well for smaller values, deep in the broken phase. 1 Electronic address: [email protected] Recently, both perturbative [1, 2, 3] and non–perturbative [4, 5] studies of the high–T electroweak phase transition have been performed, with the indication that perturbation theory works poorly in the symmetric phase, due to non–perturbative effects. The purpose of this note is to investigate the convergence of loop expansion in the broken phase. The method is to calculate the high–T asymptotic of the 2–loop effective potential in a general covariant gauge, and to extract from it a quantity which is gauge–independent in the full theory. The degree of gauge–dependence at the 2– loop level is then expected to tell something about the convergence of the expansion. In accordance with this philosophy, we do not convert the loop expansion into an expansion in the coupling constants at any stage. The convergence of loop expansion in the broken phase has also been studied in ref. [5], by comparing lattice data and perturbation theory. Our starting point is the action

Gauge dependence of the high-temperature two-loop effective potential for the Higgs field.
The high-temperature limit of the 2-loop effective potential for the Higgs field is calculated from an effective 3d theory, in a general covariant gauge. It is shown explicitly that a gauge-independent result can be extracted for the equation of state from the gauge-dependent effective potential. The convergence of perturbation theory is estimated in the broken phase, utilizing the gauge depend...

We study to what extent the three-dimensional SU(N) + adjoint Higgs theory can be used as an effective theory for finite temperature SU(N) gauge theory, with N = 2, 3. The parameters of the 3d theory are computed in 2-loop perturbation theory in terms of T /Λ MS , N, N f. The perturbative effective potential of the 3d theory is computed to two loops for N = 2. While the Z(N) symmetry probably d...

Renormalization of two-loop divergent corrections to the vacuum expectation values (v1, v2) of the two Higgs doublets in the minimal supersymmetric standard model, and their ratio tanβ = v2/v1, is discussed for general Rξ gauge fixings. When the renormalized (v1, v2) are defined to give the minimum of the loop-corrected effective potential, it is shown that, beyond the one-loop level, the dimen...
متن کاملGaussian Effective Potential for the U ( 1 ) Higgs Model
In order to investigate the Higgs mechanism nonperturbatively, we compute the Gaussian effective potential (GEP) of the U(1) Higgs model (“scalar electrodynamics”). We show that the same simple result is obtained in three different formalisms. A general covariant gauge is used, with Landau gauge proving to be optimal. The renormalization generalizes the “autonomous” renormalization for λφ4 theo...
